Ask Reddit what to send cold email with and two names come back before anyone asks about your list, your volume or your budget. We read all 650 replies in 168 of those threads from the past year, overwhelmingly in r/coldemail with r/sales, r/SaaS and r/b2b_sales behind it, counted one vote per person across 433 commenters, and removed vendors posting about their own products.

Instantly is the story here. 88 people recommended it and 44 complained, which makes it both the most recommended tool in this category and the most complained-about brand in the pull. The complaints repeat: domains burned, mailboxes suspended in blocks, warm-up pool quality, price once the inbox count rises. Smartlead sits 11 recommendations behind on a quarter of the complaints. We run cold email ourselves and we use Instantly, so to be clear: this page counts what other people said and nothing has been softened.

Two brands are missing from this table on purpose. PlusVibe drew 11 recommendations and Email Bison 5, which would have placed PlusVibe fourth. When we looked at who posted them, 10 of PlusVibe's 11 accounts and all 5 of Email Bison's had two or fewer comments anywhere in this pull, and most of those comments are the brand name and nothing else. Two further PlusVibe posters offered discount codes by direct message and were removed as vendors, while its three complaints came from accounts with long posting histories, the reverse of the pattern in its recommendations. We drop opinions copy-pasted word for word, but a claim reworded across accounts passes that test. We cannot prove what is behind it either way, so we have left both out rather than rank them. Every quote below links to its comment.

"Recommend" and "Complain" count different people, not comments. Also recommended, with too few opinions to rank: Woodpecker, Mailshake, Mailforge, Mailreef, Klenty and Expandi, on one or two opinions each, and Mailreef's two recommendations came from one low-activity account posting twice. PlusVibe and Email Bison are excluded for the reason given above.

2. Smartlead

Smartlead

Best for agencies at volume

77recommend
16complain
73threads

Second on volume, and the tool people name when they leave Instantly, on a quarter of its complaints across a similar thread count.

Why people recommend it

  • Built for agencies running many client workspaces at once
  • Inbox rotation and warm-up handle high volume without manual work
  • The standard migration target when deliverability drops elsewhere

Common complaints

  • Called buggy by several users, including crashes that consumed credits
  • Its built-in lead data is the sharpest complaint, with doubts about contact counts
  • No real-time contact verification, so lists need checking elsewhere

What Redditors said

smartlead's been the go-to migration for most people leaving instantly lately

u/Connor_Heyward_Fox in r/coldemail  ·  1 points  ·  recommends

Smartlead was built from the ground up for the agency workflow

3. lemlist

lemlist

Best multichannel sequencing

32recommend
13complain
49threads

The multichannel pick, recommended by 32 people across 49 threads. Praised for sequencing, criticised almost entirely for how it prices LinkedIn.

Why people recommend it

  • Multichannel sequencing across email and LinkedIn in one campaign
  • The usual answer when personalisation matters more than volume
  • Sits closer to a CRM workflow than the pure sending tools do

Common complaints

  • One LinkedIn account per licence, which gets expensive for multi-account outreach
  • LinkedIn steps need manual work that email steps do not
  • Several users said to skip it if the job is pure cold volume

What Redditors said

multichannel sequencing is genuinely best in class

We switched from Apollo to Lemlist partly because of data quality.

4. Saleshandy

Saleshandy

Best budget sender

15recommend
0complain
11threads

Fifteen recommendations and no complaints, the cleanest record of any tool here with double-digit support. Thirteen of those fifteen accounts had two or fewer comments anywhere in our pull, which is why we say so rather than lead with it.

Why people recommend it

  • The budget option people name when Instantly pricing comes up
  • Lead finder and sending in one tool, which several said replaced Apollo
  • Deliverability called decent rather than best in class

Common complaints

  • None in our sample

What Redditors said

Saleshandy is a strong budget option with decent deliverability

u/AioliPublic3177 in r/coldemail  ·  1 points  ·  recommends

5. Salesforge

Salesforge

Best bundled sending infrastructure

9recommend
3complain
16threads

Nine recommendations across 16 threads, three of them from two accounts that posted about it repeatedly, one of which also disclosed working there.

Why people recommend it

  • Supplies its own mailboxes and refuses external SMTP, which it argues improves warm-up
  • Bundles email sending with unlimited LinkedIn senders
  • Support responsiveness came up twice

Common complaints

  • Pay-per-consumption pricing was called hard to plan around
  • One demo left a buyer unimpressed, another called the product barely developed

What Redditors said

they're very communicative and have a lot of people troubleshooting our issues

u/Sulauk in r/coldemail  ·  2 points  ·  recommends

Salesforge (solid AI + LinkedIn + email sequencing)

u/Flashy_Discount_1613 in r/coldemail  ·  1 points  ·  recommends

Salesforge is easier, but costlier. The pay per consumption model is tough.

6. Amplemarket

Amplemarket

Best replacement for a legacy platform

8recommend
1complain
7threads

Eight recommendations, mostly from sales teams describing what they moved to after a legacy platform.

Why people recommend it

  • Named by teams migrating off Salesloft and Outreach
  • Buying signals, AI prioritisation and execution in one workflow
  • Pairs with Clay for data, according to the people running it

Common complaints

  • Called extremely expensive, with doubts about whether the AI layer earns its price

What Redditors said

what clicked for us with amplemarket was having signals, daily ai prioritization, and execution in one workflow

u/sales_ops_guy in r/coldemail  ·  2 points  ·  recommends

its extremely expensive and not clear whether the AI stuff actually helps

7. HeyReach

HeyReach

Best LinkedIn layer

7recommend
1complain
12threads

The LinkedIn half of the stack. Nobody recommended it as a cold email tool on its own: every recommendation pairs it with Instantly or Smartlead.

Why people recommend it

  • Handles LinkedIn automation alongside an email sender
  • Agencies use it to run many LinkedIn accounts at once

Common complaints

  • One comparison placed a rival's error rate below HeyReach's

What Redditors said

Instantly + HeyReach = better deliverability + stronger email/LinkedIn execution

8. Mixmax

Mixmax

Best inside Gmail

5recommend
0complain
8threads

Five recommendations and no complaints, all from people who wanted sequences inside Gmail rather than a separate platform.

Why people recommend it

  • Lives in Gmail, so there is no second interface to learn
  • Email tracking, sequences and follow-up reminders in one place, plus meeting prep

Common complaints

  • None in our sample

What Redditors said

For the pipeline stuff I use Mixmax because it lives in Gmail so theres basically no context switching and the follow-up reminders are solid

u/BroadProfessor9006 in r/digital_marketing  ·  1 points  ·  recommends

Why people recommend it

  • Email, LinkedIn, SMS and calls in one sequence
  • A/B testing built in, and migration in was called easy

Common complaints

  • Described as a tool teams outgrow once volume rises

QuickMail

Best conservative sender

4threads

Three recommendations and no complaints, all about sending conservatively rather than at volume.

Why people recommend it

  • The cautious option, next to Woodpecker

Common complaints

  • None in our sample

What Redditors said

QuickMail and Woodpecker are more conservative and stable

11. Salesloft

Salesloft

Split opinion, enterprise cadences

3recommend
3complain
11threads

An even split across 11 threads: three recommendations, about running cadences, and three complaints, about paying for a platform you use a fraction of.

Why people recommend it

  • The standard answer for running structured sales cadences
  • Suits teams that call as well as email

Common complaints

  • Hard to justify the price if your team is not heavy on calling
  • Called heavy for teams doing straight volume outreach

What Redditors said

Personally I use use salesloft to run simple cadences and reminders

u/N8Mcln in r/sales  ·  2 points  ·  recommends

if you're not heavy on calling you might struggle to justify the pricepoint

u/TheJamesLW in r/coldemail  ·  3 points  ·  complaint

The one Reddit complains about

Only one brand here drew more complaints than recommendations, and it did so on three opinions. In a sample of 433 people, cold email tools get argued about rather than dismissed: the brands with the most criticism are also the brands with the most support. Salesloft came closest to an even split and is ranked above.

Outreach.io

Outreach.io

The one people outgrew

1recommend
2complain
3threads

The only brand in this category with more complaints than recommendations: one against two, across three threads. Treat it as a signal and not a verdict.

Why people recommend it

  • Still named as a decent platform by one person
  • Nobody disputed what it does, only what it costs to live with

Common complaints

  • Called bloated, with manual steps the newer tools automate
  • Too heavy for teams that stopped doing enterprise-style outbound
  • Named as the thing people migrated away from, usually to Amplemarket

What Redditors said

Outreach.io is decent, too

u/prerna_varyani in r/coldemail  ·  1 points  ·  recommends

outreach felt bloated, heavy on manual steps

How we built this ranking

We pulled every Reddit thread from the past 12 months in cold outreach, sales and SaaS subreddits, then kept the threads about cold email sending, warm-up and sequencing tools. An AI model read each comment that named a tool and labelled it as a recommendation, a complaint or a neutral mention, and we checked that every quote appears word for word in the original comment. Vendors posting about their own products were removed, as was any opinion copy-pasted across different accounts. r/coldemail is the most promotion-heavy subreddit in our dataset, so we also checked every brand's recommendations against the posting history behind them, looking for low-activity accounts repeating one claim about an obscure brand with a spotless record. Two brands failed that check and are named in the introduction, and Saleshandy is the borderline case we kept. We refresh the data regularly.

Cold email tool FAQ

What is the best cold email tool according to Reddit?

Instantly, on volume: 88 recommendations against 77 for Smartlead. It also collected 44 complaints against Smartlead's 16, so the ranking by recommendations and the ranking by satisfaction are not the same ranking.

Why is Instantly both the most recommended and the most complained about tool?

Because it is the default. Almost everyone sending cold email starts there, so it accumulates both. The 44 complaints cluster on burned domains, suspended mailboxes, warm-up pool quality and price at scale. We use Instantly ourselves and have left the count as the threads gave it.

Instantly or Smartlead?

The threads do not settle it. Instantly leads on volume of support (88 against 77) and on ease of setup. Smartlead carries a far lower complaint rate (16 against 44) and is the named migration target when deliverability drops. Smartlead's weak spot is its built-in lead data, which nobody defended.

What is the cheapest cold email tool people actually recommend?

Saleshandy, with 15 recommendations and 0 complaints, described as a budget option with decent deliverability. QuickMail and Woodpecker come up for low-volume sending, and lemlist's entry plan when the requirement is personalisation rather than scale.

Can you trust tool recommendations in r/coldemail?

Not at face value. This category came almost entirely from one subreddit where agencies and tool founders recommend each other's products, and two brands drew enough support from accounts with no other activity in our pull that we left them out of the table. The brands at the top are safer to read, because dozens of established accounts argue about them in both directions.
